What to see

Grossmunster

Feel history at Fraumünster & Grossmünster
The 13th-century church Fraumünster and twin-towered Grossmünster cathedral are renowned for their distinctive stained-glass windows, designed by the Russian-Jewish artist Marc Chagall as well as Swiss artist Augusto Giacometti. You can climb the South tower of the cathedral.

Cabaret Voltaire. Photo by Alan Davis
On the trace of Dada movement
Antibourgeois, rebellious, nihilistic and deliberately nonsensical, the iconoclastic Dada movement was born at the Cabaret Voltaire in 1916 and will turn 100 in less than a decade. Cabaret Voltaire recently reopened as an exhibition space dedicated to modern Swiss art and hosting Dada-related events.

Le Corbusier Pavilion
Explore Zurich architectural pride
The Le Corbusier Pavilion was the architect’s last building before his death. Looking like a Mondrian painting set in parkland, with differently colored panels, the exterior is well worth seeing. For certain months of the year, limited openings allow you to view the interior, now containing much of Le Corbusier’s talented output.

What to do

Wings Bar
Lounge bar Wings
When Swissair went bankrupt in 2001, some former employees set up lounge bar Wings using the airline’s cutlery, crockery and even a few aeroplane seats. Given a few Hawaiian additions, it’s very much Barry Manilow meets Wallpaper* magazine.

Tonhalle. Zürich Tourism/Manuel Bauer
Enjoy live music at Tonhalle
If live music is your thing, Tonhalle is an opulent venue used by Zürich’s orchestra and chamber orchestra, and is patronized by the city’s elite. The Opera House also enjoys a worldwide reputation.

Rote Fabrik
Art centre
Long-standing counter-cultural institution Rote Fabrik has gone more mainstream in recent years, but still stages rock concerts, original-language films, theatre and dance performances. There’s also a bar and restaurant making this venue good for the whole evening. The venue opens every night of the week aside from Mondays.

In the 14th-century, Zürich’s craftsmen formed themselves into 13 guilds, and the building now occupied by restaurant Zunfthaus zum Rüden belonged to the noble Constaffel society.
