What to see

Trevi Fountain. Photo by Karsten Schulz
  The Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is Rome’s largest and most famous fountain. An extravagant baroque work, designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732, it depicts Neptune’s chariot being led by Tritons with sea horses – one wild, one docile – representing the moods of the sea.

Colosseum   Feel the history at The Colosseum
No visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Colosseum. A monument to raw, merciless power, it was here that gladiators met in mortal combat and condemned prisoners faced wild beasts in front of baying, bloodthirsty crowds. Grab an audio or video guide to beat the queues.

Pantheon   Ancient glories – The Pantheon
The Pantheon is one of Rome’s major icons. A striking 2000-year-old temple, now church, it is a truly remarkable building, a magnificent monument to the skill of Ancient Rome’s visionary architects. Open daily and best of all, admission is free.

What to do

Rome   Go for a visit at the Hidden Caffè Capitolino
The amazing terrace of Caffè Capitolino overlooking the domes of Rome is a well-kept secret. It’s hidden away behind the Capitoline Museums, and accessible from the piazza even if you haven’t done the cultural bit inside the museums themselves.

Teatro Olimpico   Teatro Olimpico
Teatro Olimpico, home to the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, has excellent acoustics and an eclectic rag-bag program that, besides many venerable classical performances, includes farces, musicals, comedians, plays and dance. Regular performances by big international dance stars and companies add to the glamour.

Where to eat

La Gensola   Unpretentious but classy at La Gensola
Discreet Sicilian La Gensola fills brightly lit, graceful adjoining rooms, and offers superb cooking. It specializes in seafood – try the delicious tuna tartare or pasta with fresh anchovies. Unpretentious but classy, waiters are knowledgeable and quirky, and foodies will love it.

La Montecarlo   Charming pizzeria
La Montecarlo is a true-Roman pizzeria full of raucous charm. Good for those exploring the historic centre, it’s a good mix of locals and visitors. Expect thin, wood-charred pizzas, paper tablecloths, celebrity photos on the walls, supercharged waiters, and the possibly one of the best pizzas of your life.

La Piazzetta   Molto simpatico Piazzetta
La Piazzetta, molto simpatico! This gay-friendly restaurant has a fabulous antipasti buffet and equally impressive primi and secondi. Try the yolky carbonara. A dessert-sampler buffet means you don’t have to make any difficult decisions between one pudding or the next.
