What to see

MarienPlatz. Photo by Mick Byrne
  Experiencing Marienplatz
The heart and the soul of the Altstadt, Marienplatz is a popular gathering spot and packs a lot of personality into its relatively small frame. For pinpointing Munich’s landmarks without losing your breath, catch the lift up the 85m-tall tower.

Theatinerkirche. Photo by McPig   Visit Theatinerkirche
The mustard-yellow Theatinerkirche built to commemorate the 1662 birth of Prince Max Emanuel, was dreamed up by Swiss architect Enrico Zuccalli. It’s a voluptuous design with two massive twin towers flanking a giant cupola. Inside an intensely ornate dome lords over the royal crypt, the final destination of several Wittelsbach rulers.

Asamkirche   Immerse yourself in Asamkirche
Though pocket-sized, the late baroque Asamkirche, built in 1746, is as rich and epic as a giant’s treasure chest. Its creators, brothers who lived next door, swathed every inch of wall space with paintings, cherubs, gold leaf and stucco flourishes.

What to do

Augustiner Brewery   Enjoy a beer at Augustiner brewery
An aroma of hops envelops you as you approach this beer hall inside the actual Augustiner brewery, popular with the brewmeisters themselves (there’s always a table for them). Giant black draft horses are stabled behind glass on your way to the bathroom.

Olympic Stadium. Photo by Lionel Cosgrove   Visit the Olympic Stadium
Don’t have time for the Alps? Head to the Olympic Stadium for a walk on the roof. Just like on the mountains you’ll be roped to a steel cable as you clamber around under the eagle-eyed supervision of an experienced guide showering you with fascinating detail about the architecture and construction. Unusual perspectives guaranteed.

Harry Klein's   Alternative party at Harry Klein’s
Harry Klein’s amazing mix of electro sounds and visuals give this party place a punky, funky edge and attract a crowd to match. Great to crash in the small hours, where live video art mixes are projected onto the walls.

Where to eat

Bratwurstherzl   Enjoy a traditional chow house Bratwurstherzl
Cozy panelling and an ancient vaulted brick ceiling set the tone of Old Munich chow house Bratwurstherzl. Home-made organic sausages are grilled to perfection on an open beechwood fire, and best enjoyed with a cold beer straight from the wooden keg.

Lamm's   Good food for little money
Lamm’s is old school, but after a night of partying, a pile of Lamm’s spare ribs is simply the perfect hangover antidote at this 24-hour spot. On weekdays, tourists invade for the €5 lunches. Awarded an ecoseal from the Bavarian government for minimizing packaging, using local and seasonal produce and recycling.

Cafe Ruffini   Enjoy a drink at Café Ruffini
Been-here-forever Café Ruffini is a fun place to be no matter what time it is. On sunny days the rooftop terrace gets a steady stream of tattooed scenesters, hip families and students. Organic ingredients are used wherever possible.
