Start in Amsterdam where beer has been popular since the 14th century - at one time the Dutch could lay claim to no fewer than 559 brewers.

Catch the train to Antwerp next (home of Belgian brew De Koninck), and then onto Brussels – Belgium may be tiny but its beers are big and bold.

No country in the world boasts a brewing tradition as rich and diverse. Head through Luxembourg and Metz on your way to Stuttgart, situated in a beautiful area of the Swabian Mountains.

As you move on through your journey into Switzerland’s Zurich for a stop, prepare for the highlight of your trip – the Bernina Express, climbing the Bernina Pass to its icy summit before heading through to Torino, on Italy’s border.

If you’re traveling in September to October, see if you can find your way back to Munich for the crowning glory of your trip, Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest collective drink-up.
