What to see

Museum of Cocoa. Photo by Swamibu
  Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate
If ever a city was to be known for its connection to chocolate, then Brussels is surely it. You can pay homage at the city’s Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, which includes taste-testing at a praline making demonstration.

Grand Place.Photo by M. Van Hulst/Brussels tourism office www.brusselsinternational.be   Grand Place
For one of Europe’s finest urban views, be sure to head straight to Brussels’ magnificent central square, Grand Place. It boasts the country’s best baroque guildhalls, the beautiful Hôtel de Ville, museums, pavement cafés, confectionary shops and intimate cellar restaurants – a combination that lures visitors in droves.

Brussels City Museum   Brussels City Museum
The Brussels City Museum provides an historical overview of the city through old maps and architectural relics. One room on is entirely devoted to the worldly wardrobe of Manneken Pis, the legendary statue and national symbol.

What to do

Moeder Lambic. Photo by Kmeron   Do not miss Moeder Lambic!
Home to the A to Z of Belgian beers, Moeder Lambic is a dark, smoky brown café and the place to sample every brew in the book. To be sure, it’s at the top of every serious beer lover’s crawl.

Supper Club - Amsterdam Toerisme & Congres Bureau   Live concert at Beursschouwburg
Brussels has a number of choices for live music – Beursschouwburg is back after a few years of renovations and showcases a diverse mix of contemporary rock, rap and disco, while Forest National is home to larger international gigs. For a more laid-back bluesy evening, we recommend Bizon.

Music Village   Jazz at Music Village
The Music Village, Brussels’ most polished jazz venue, is housed in two 17th-century buildings a few streets from the Grand Place. The musos are squeezed onto a podium that’s visible from everywhere. Pay €2 above cover charge to get round the members-only rule.

Where to eat

Rouge d'Or   Tradition and artistic atmosphere
At the Brasserie de la Rouge d’Or the décor pays homage to the city’s surrealist artists and the food is traditional and excellent – it’s got locals well and truly hooked. A perfect spot for late-night dining, with mains from €15.

Rue St. Boniface. Photo by TPMpix   The famous rue St Boniface
If you can’t choose where to eat, then we recommend you head down to Rue St Boniface – an intimate little street, crammed with eateries of all persuasions. An all-round favorite for a casual meal is L’Ultime Atome, which consistently buzzes with an eclectic crowd, and a great selection of vegetarian food.

Picnick   Healthy break at Picnick
Picnick is one of a new breed of snack bars gathering steam in Brussels. This one’s firmly Flemish, totally vegetarian and mostly organic. An out-of-the-way location that’s well worth seeking out. Serves lunch and dinner with mains from €8.
